The Story of Ys II - A Summary

Ys II picks up mere moments after the end of the first game.

Surrounded by white light, Adol is transported to a floating island where he is found in a field by a girl named Lillia. A flashback reveals that 700 years ago (eventually as part of the events of Ys Origin) Feena and Reah used a large glowing orb to raise Ys high into the sky, leaving behind a giant crater. This is where Adol now finds himself.

Back in town, Lillia's mother asks Adol to deliver a letter to the town doctor which has information about Lillia's illness. Adol discovers that the doctor has been trapped in the Rasteenie mines by a cave-in. Adol agrees to rescue the doctor, and seeks permission from the town elder to enter the mine. The elder sees Adol's magic books and tells him that he must have been guided there by the spirits of the Priests of Ys. Adol is directed to seek out the Sanctuary of Toal inside the mines, and to return each book to a matching statue of one of the six Priests.

Adol begins this quest and finds the doctor, who says he was searching for a cure for Lillia in the mines. Adol retrieves the herbs for the doctor who gives them to Lillia. When Lillia finds all this out, she swears a life debt to Adol.

Back inside the mines, Adol returns all six books to their respective statues and learns more about how the demons appeared on Ys at the same time as the island below. Adol then receives a new quest: find the demons' master in the Shrine of Solomon to rid the world of demons forever.

On his way, Adol passes through the Glacier of Noltia and the Moat of Burnedbless, which were greated by Feena and Reah 700 years ago to (sadly, unsuccessfully) stop the demons. In the Moat, Adol finds a Colony of Lava where he is barred from leaving via the main bridge. However, he is able to save Tarf, a child in town and the bridgekeeper's son, and gain access to the bridge.

Adol eventually arrives at the Village of Ramia, just outside the Shrine of Solomon. Adol infiltrates the Shrine but is found out by Dalles, a dark magician, who sees through his surprise. After overcoming numerous obstacles Adol discovers the hideout of some previously kidnapped villagers. Among them is Lillia. Dalles finds the hideout and turns everyone to stone except Adol.

Pressing on, Adol meets a friendly demon named Keith who directs him to the Campanile of Lane, a bell tower. Adol defeats Zava, a sorcerer, along the way and attempts to stop the sacrifice of a villager named Maria at the hands of Dalles. Adol appears to fail, but notices later that Maria's body is nowhere to be found. At the Campanile Adol finds a Dreaming Stone Idol, capable of removing the magical petrification from the villagers. He saves them, then fights and defeats Dalles.

Adol reaches the Shrine's core and finds that a number of villagers - each one of them a descendant of one of the Priests - have come to help. He sees, too, that Maria did indeed survive the ritual thanks to a magical bracelet. Outside of the final room, Adol discovers Feena and Reah trapped by magic energy.

Goban and Luta (from Ys I) suddenly appear with Reah's silver harmonica, which Adol plays to free the goddesses. The two then tell Adol of the history of Ys and how 700 years ago they sealed away the magical power of the Black Pearl which was responsible for powering Ys but also created the demons. It's now up to Adol to destroy it.

And so he does in a climactic fight. Ys begins to float back down to the island, and Feena and Reah say a tearful goodbye to Adol as they return to an eternal, magical sleep to watch over Esteria.
